Afghans March Outside UNHCR Office to Protest Against Pakistan’s Increased Pressure on Refugees

Hasht-E Subh Hundreds of Afghan refugees protested in front of the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Islamabad after a report published by Hasht-e Subh about the plight of Afghan nationals and Pakistan’s increased pressure on refugees.

Dozens of Afghan refugees in Islamabad held a demonstration on Tuesday (November 22nd), asking the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to take action after the deadline set by Pakistan to deport or punish those foreign nationals who do not hold residence permits. Sources confirmed that SHARP Pakistan has been interviewing immigrants for acquiring refugee status without prior arrangements in the past two days. Therefore, a large number of Afghan nationals have visited the office to register themselves, sources detailed.

It should be noted that the Ministry of Interior of Pakistan has asked citizens of foreign countries who do not have visas to leave Pakistan by December 31, 2022. Based on the newsletter of Pakistan’s Interior Ministry, a person who stays illegally in Pakistan for more than one year will be blacklisted, and a longer illegal presence in this country will lead to three years in custody. The Pakistan government’s move has sparked widespread outcry among Afghan refugees in Pakistan.
