Unrest Erupts in Kazakhstan

(Hasht-e-Subh) Unrest and protests in Kazakhstan,  erupt amid rising gas prices, reportedly has left dozens dead. Kazakh president called in Russian-led security bloc to deploy troops, The United Nations has called for restraint, saying that violence should not be used. Russia has sent troops to quell the protests, Reuters reported. The deployment reportedly coincides with a new wave of violence in Kazakhstan.

Almaty police say dozens of “insurgents” were killed overnight and in the early hours of Thursday morning. Officials also said 18 security personnel had been killed. Two of these forces are said to have been beheaded. The police reported the number of protesters was about two thousand.

Protesters set fire to the Almaty City Hall, the president’s residence, attacking the city’s airport.However, the military is said to have taken control of Almaty airport. The sound of gunfire, explosions, and clashes has been heard frequently during the day.

As the unrest in Kazakhstan continues, it was reported that the price of uranium, of which the country is a major producer, had risen in world markets. The Internet is said to have been cut off in Kazakhstan. It has made it difficult to access information about what is happening in this country.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has said that the unrest is caused by “foreign-trained terrorists” who seized public buildings and weapons.

Meanwhile, Michelle Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has called on all parties, including security forces, protesters, and others, to refrain from violence and seek a peaceful solution.The UN Commission on Human Rights said that international law gives people the right to peaceful protest and freedom of expression. But no matter how angry they are, they should not resort to violence.
