Everyone is looking for a nice Indian boy to marry. But if you are a Indian gay man, it become more Challenging. Naveen(Siddharth Sharma) sees Keshav(Braeden Saucy) praying at a Hindu temple. He acts like a good Hindu boy with his devotional prayer, but he doesn’t look Indian. He was adopted by Indian parents. Naveen is impressed with this good-looking guy. So, he asks him for date to see an Indian Movie (Dil Wale Dulhania Lay Jayange) which Keshav has already seen many times. Six months after dating Naveen wants to take Keshav to see his parents. It seems like Bollywood movie. But not quite.
Movie comes out in theatres in April but its on stage at the Bernie Legge Theatre in Queen’s Park in New Westminster BC. This adaptation written by Madhuri Shekar is directed by C.K Kaur for Vagabond Players until March 2nd. The play in set in San Francisco and was originally staged in Los Angeles.
It turns out. Keshav is more Indian than Naveen and Naveen is more American than Keshav. Keshav spent time in India to absorb his adopted culture, while Naveen is trying hard to be American in a racist and homophobic society.
When Naveen takes Keshav home to his parents. Naveen is embarrassed by how Keshav is acting so Indian to impress his parents while Naveen is tone down his Indianness and his sexuality. When thigs blow up because of culture clash, Keshav walks out feeling not supported by Naveen. Naveen feels abandoned because while Keshav is trying so hard to be Indian, he doesn’t understand Naveen and his struggle to be accepted by his family and American society.
The actors are very believable and really engaging. Particularly Yasmin Tayob who plays the mother and pulls things together like and good Indian mother. Kaur has done and really good job of directing this melodramatic comedy. Just like and good Bollywood Movie with songs selected form Dil Wale…
