Refugee claimants forced to sleep in the streets in Canada

by Imtiaz Popat

Refugee claimants have been camped out on downtown Toronto sidewalks. They are joined by angry advocates accusing politicians of racism and dereliction of duty for welcoming the refugee claimants with open arms, but greeting them with closed doors once they arrived.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow has placed the blame squarely on the Canadian government, which seems to have been caught off guard by the situation despite orchestrating it.

The Canadian government allows refugee claimants to come to claim asylum, but they do not provide funding to house them while waiting for the claim, forcing them to seek refugee in homeless shelters or sleep on streets.
