Prince Amyn Muhammad Aga Khan visits Canada to mark 50 years of significant presence of Ismaili Muslims. This year marks the 50th anniversary former Ugandan dictator, Idi Amin, expelling the 80,000-member Asian community including Ismaili Muslims in August of 1972. Many of them started arriving in Canada at the end of September in 1972.

Canadian Senator Jaffer who also fled Uganda as refugee, says that although those were difficult days when they came to Canada as refugees, many refugees today have a much more difficult time. Many Ismaili refugees also came from Afghanistan as result of the Afghan war. Many other Ismailis have also come from other parts of East Africa, India and Pakistan.
