MAJA MA is the story of a Garba queen, Pallavi Patel (Madhuri Dixit) who is a mother of two adult children living in Ahmedabad with her husband Manohar (Gajraj Rao) and daughter Tara (Srishti Shrivastava). Her son Tejas (Ritwik Bhowmik) studying in New York, where he falls in love with Esha (Barkha Singh), the daughter of the very high class Bob Hansraj (Rajit Kapur) and Pam (Sheeba Chadha), who feel that he wants to marry Esha for her wealth.
They fly down to Ahmedabad during Navratri celebrations to meet Tejas’s parents to make sure he comes from a respectable family where Pallavi’s secret of a same sex love affair comes out of the closet, leading to a very melodramatic confrontation between mother and son. Dixit’s performance both in acting and garba is very moving with a modern touch which also carries the film.
This is a very sensitive modern story by Sumit Batheja exploring acceptance of same sex relationship of an older woman and how she express it. Sumit Batheja’s screenplay and Anand Tiwari’s direction is very touching and brings tears to the viewer’s eyes. Currently streaming on Prime, well worth a watch in time for the Navratri and Diwali season.
