International students seeking asylum in Canada increases dramatically

International students seeking  asylum in Canada risen by 1500% compared to 2018, according to Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada. Canada government data 2024-2027 study and work permit applicant shows a rise in applications.

Minister of immigration, refugees and citizenship of Canada, Marc Miller set new conditions for international students, foreign workers and spouses to cut down the rate of work permit by 35% in 2024 and by 10% for 2025 and 2026 respectively.

Transitioning from Temporary Resident (TR) to Permanent Resident (PR) status in Canada make it difficult for some students to get sponsorship. Students coming to Canada has increased in the last number of years as it is one of the ways many are finding their way to Canada to overcome the Canadian governments restrictive immigration policy.

In January, Canada increased the cost-of-living requirement for study permit applicants to reflect true cost of living in Canada and help prevent student vulnerability and exploitation.
