On June 23, 1985, thirty-nine years ago, Air India flight 182 was blown midair above the Irish Sea killing all 329 people aboard. And another blast at the Narita airport almost around the same time had left two baggage handlers dead. And whereas, it was later established by the Canadian authorities that the bombs used in the crime had originated from Vancouver.
Following thorough investigation, Inderjit Singh Reyat was charged and convicted for manslaughter and two other suspects Ripudaman Singh Malik and Ajaib Singh Bagri were acquitted due to lack of evidence. The investigation remains inconclusive and some Canadians with proximity to the Indian consulate had cancelled their travel plans before the tragedy.
Some potential suspects behind the conspiracy were known to have Indian connections. The Sikh activists have been complaining that Indian agencies could be involved in Air India bombing to discredit their movement for years and whereas, Malik had become the supporter of the Indian government before his mysterious murder in July, 2022. He had a meeting with the head of the Indian spy agency R&AW when he was given visa to travel to India.
After his murder, a section of the Indian media tried to portray Malik as a victim of Khalistanis and the President of Surrey-Delta Gurdwara President Hardeep Singh Nijjar as a suspect, the latter anticipated some kind of retaliation. On May 2023, Nijjar made a statement suggesting danger to his life and whereas, he was murdered on June 18, 2023, a month later at the Surrey-Delta Gurdwara.
The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had acknowledged in the House of Commons that the Indian agencies could be behind his murder and whereas, the US authorities indicted Nikhil Gupta for allegedly paying for the contract killing of Nijjar’s colleague Gurpatwant Singh Pannu at the behest of an Indian official.
It has now been documented that the Indian agents have been trying to penetrate into the political system of Canada and whereas, Gupta had also mentioned about Nijjar’s murder and intentions to kill other people in Canada and US.
We the permanent residents and citizens of Canada, call upon the Government of Canada to launch a fresh public inquiry to uncover the involvement of Indian agencies behind the worst human tragedy in the history of aviation terrorism before 9/11.
