Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Bhagwant Mann assumed office as the 18th chief minister of Punjab at the state civil secretariat in Chandigarh. At the swearing-in ceremony at Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of the legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which means ordinary peoples party in English swept the polls in the elections that were just held.
The ‘pandal’, with yellow drapes and 50,000 chairs, has been set up on 40 acres land near the Bhagat Singh memorial in the village in Nawanshahr district.
Besides newly-elected AAP MLAs, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and other senior party leaders were also present at the ceremony. The Aam Aadmi Party won 92 seats in the 117-member Punjab Assembly, decimating the Congress and other parties combined.
APP is encouraged by the landslide election to repeat this momentum in the state elections in Rajasthan next year and the Indian general election the following year challenging the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
