The Girlfriend  a Telugu film now on Netflix is not a typical love story. Writer and director Rahul Ravindran crafts a realistic drama challenging the notion of a typical Indian love story.

Bhooma Devi (Rashmika Mandanna) is an M.A. literature student meets Vikram (Dheeksith Shetty), the college hero. Vikram Invites home to watch a movie. Bhomma naively accepts and falls into Vikram trap. Bhomma is confused about how she was trapped into this relationship. She is pressured into a typical college love story narrative, questioning what was going on.

When Vikram takes her to meet his mom on his birthday, Bhooma realizes that Vikram expecting her to become like his mom, a typical docile housewife.

Her father finds out and storms to the college to take her home. Bhooma is trapped by a controlling boyfriend and father. Caught in abusive relationship by both men, Bhooma fights back.

This is essentially a woman centred film about abusive women taking back their own power. This is not a typical Indian love story and didn’t do that well at the box office when released last month. But it’s great fit and watch on the home screen on Netflix.
