The exhibition celebrates two milestones: the 20th anniversary of the South Asian Arts Society (SAA) and the 10th anniversary of the Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts. The photographs highlight dance, music, and theatre practices rooted in South Asian diasporic communities.
Since its founding in 2005, SAA has developed performances and educational opportunities for individuals of all ages and artistic backgrounds. Its mission is to foster spaces where South Asian culture is not only preserved but continually reimagined through new projects, bold ideas, and collaborative expression.
SAA’s first initiative, Camp Dosti, a summer program for elementary school-aged children, launched in 2005. The following year, the organization debuted its first theatre production, Fish Eyes, and in 2016, introduced the Monsoon Festival of Performing Arts. Since then, SAA has built a vibrant arts community across the Lower Mainland through varied programs such as artistic presentations, theatrical arts, and education.
20 Years of South Asian Arts: A Photographic Journey captures memorable moments and gestures that reflect the diverse traditions shaping SAA’s work in Surrey. Whether through the joyful energy of Bhangra, the soulful pulse of a Qawwali concert, or the laughter of sketch comedy, these snapshots reveal the stories and communities that have defined its legacy.
Alongside the photographs are objects that carry stories and performative significance: a Dhol drum driving each beat, the celebratory jingles of a Chimta, the rhythmic bells of Ghunghroos, and stage garments that dazzle with vibrant colours. Together, these objects and images mark the spirit and narrative of South Asian culture that SAA has proudly championed for two decades.
